HC Deb 18 January 1988 vol 125 c475W
Mr. Wareing

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representation he has received seeking the abolition of the married man's income tax allowance; and what response he has made.

Mr. Norman Lamont

[holding answer 14 January 1988]: My right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer continues to receive a wide range of correspondence on this subject. Replies have referred to the Green Paper, "The Reform of Personal Taxation", which outlined a possible new system of independent taxation of husband and wife with a standard personal tax allowance transferrable between spouses, and to the fact that we are now exploring the possibility of a halfway house to the Green Paper approach.
