§ Mr. WareingTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representation he has received seeking the abolition of the married man's income tax allowance; and what response he has made.
§ Mr. Norman Lamont[holding answer 14 January 1988]: My right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer continues to receive a wide range of correspondence on this subject. Replies have referred to the Green Paper, "The Reform of Personal Taxation", which outlined a possible new system of independent taxation of husband and wife with a standard personal tax allowance transferrable between spouses, and to the fact that we are now exploring the possibility of a halfway house to the Green Paper approach.
