To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will give the date, place and nature of any ministerial statements prior to 11 June 1987 which local councils in the provision of dwellings for rent, as set out in the answer to the hon. Member for Walsall, North on 18 December 1987,Official Report, column 789; and if he will make a statement.

The policy was clearly set out in chapter 5 of the White paper "Housing: The Government's Proposals" (Cm 214) which was itself foreshadowed by the Conservative Party document "The Next Moves Forward" published in May 1987.
