Mr. Gordon Brown

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list the money spent on the advertising of privatisation sales, for each sale since 1979.

Mr. Norman Lamont [holding answer 18 December 1987]: The total expenditure on advertising for recent privatisation and residual share sales is as follows:

(1) Advertising costs associated with these sales were shared with the companies concerned. Details of the cost sharing arrangements negotiated for each sale are not held centrally.

(2) Figures include expenditure on corporate advertising, offer for sale advertising and advertising agency fees.

(3) The BP figure is an estimate. Final costs to be confirmed.

(4) Advertising costs for earlier share sales are not held centrally.
