HC Deb 18 January 1988 vol 125 c521W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many(a) full-time males on adult rates, (b) full-time females on adult rates and (c) full-time employees on adult rates earned (i) £110 per week or less and (ii) £120 per week or less, in Scotland during the last year for which figures are available; and what are the corresponding figures for each year since 1979.

Mr. Lang

Estimates of the numbers of full-time employees on adult rates by the level of their earnings are not available. The table gives information about the distribution of gross weekly earnings for some full-time employees. The source is the "New Earnings Survey", which is conducted by the Department of Employment and covers a 1 per cent. sample of employees who are members of PAYE schemes. The corresponding figures for years prior to 1984 are not readily available. The percentages for male employees and for female employees are given in table 114 of the "New Earnings Survey" part E reports, available in the Library of the House.

Full-time employees on adult rates whose earnings for the survey pay-period were not affected by absence
Scotland Percentage with gross weekly earnings
less than £110 less than £120
April
1984 32.2 39.4
1985 26.8 34.4
1986 22.1 28.9
1987 18.3 24.6

Note: These figures are subject to sampling errors, and cannot be assumed to apply to all full-time employees because they do not cover, for example, private domestic servants, those who are not on adult rates, and those who are not members of PAYE schemes.
