HC Deb 18 January 1988 vol 125 cc514-5W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what information he has on recent talks between the South of Scotland Electricity Board and the Icelandic ambassador to the United Kingdom concerning prospects for importing electrical power by cable from Iceland; and what consideration has been given by his Department to any such imports of Icelandic electricity.

Mr. Lang

I am aware that there has been some speculation about the possiblility of importing electricity from Iceland by submarine cable, but I have no knowledge of any discussions with the Scottish electricity boards and I have received no firm proposals. However, I understand that the Icelandic Minister of Industry is planning to visit Scotland shortly and that the question of exporting electricity to the United Kingdom may be among the topics he wishes to explore.
