HC Deb 18 January 1988 vol 125 cc574-7W
Mr. Robin Cook

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the numbers of available beds in National Health Service hospitals in England for each year since 1979, expressed as totals and by specialty; and if he will break down the totals by region.

Mrs. Currie

The information requested is contained in the booklets "Forms SH3, EDP4, 5 & 6—Regional and National summaries", copies of which have been placed in the Library.

Mr. Robin Cook

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list, by district health authority, regional health authority and special health authority, the average daily number of beds available in 1979 and 1986 for all specialties and for acute specialties.

Mrs. Currie

For the information on the total number of beds in each health authority I refer the hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Member for Peckham (Ms. Harman) on 17 December 1987, at columns699–703. The information requested on acute beds is given in the table. Between 1979 and 1986 the number of in-patient and day cases treated in the acute sector rose from 4.8 million to 5.9 million, an increase of 24.5 per cent.
