§ Mr. SteenTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much extra finance is being made available for implementing the general certificate of secondary education curriculum.
§ Mrs. RumboldFor the start of the GCSE courses in September 1986, the Government provided directly for some £30 million expenditure on books, equipment and in-service training in England. Our expenditure plans allow for a further £115 million to be spent in the financial year 1987–88, and up to £104 million to be spent in 1988–89, on non-teaching costs and in-service training associated with the introduction of the GCSE. In addition, the Government have provided some £1 million in assistance to the GCSE examining groups in England in the years 1984–85 to 1987–88, mainly to help provide training for teachers and examiners.
