HC Deb 18 January 1988 vol 125 c487W
Mr. Canavan

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people have been killed or injured by police using firearms in each year since 1979; and how many of those had neither been convicted of any offence, nor were being pursued by the police in connection with any alleged offence.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The available information is as follows:

Year Injuries Deaths
1979 1
1980 4 1
1981 1
1982 3
1983 3
1984 5
1985 3 1
1986 1
1987 5 5
TOTAL 25 8

Of these, three persons who were injured, and two persons who were killed, were not being pursued by the police in connection with any alleged offence. The information relating to the number of those injured or killed who had not been convicted of any offence could not be obtained without disproportionate cost.
