HC Deb 18 January 1988 vol 125 c494W
Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations Her Majesty's Government have made to the Bahrain authorities about allegations of torture, ill-treatment of political prisoners and other human rights abuses in the light of the 1987 Amnesty International report, a copy of which has been sent to him; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellor

Her Majesty's ambassador in Bahrain has made representations at senior levels to the Bahraini authorities who are in no doubt about our views on torture and abuse of human rights. They are also aware of the legitimate interest taken by Amnesty International in these matters. A team from Amnesty International visited Bahrain in April and June 1987. They were well received and have entered into a dialogue with the Government of Bahrain.
