To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, pursuant to his reply of 13 January,Official Report, column 280, if he will give the nature and quantity of radioactive waste discharged from the Animal Virus Research Institute for the most convenient period and the manner of disposal.

Records of radioactive waste discharges are not held by Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution but they are kept at the Animal Virus Research Institute. They are inspected by Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution to check that the discharges are within authorised limits. Waste liquids are discharged to the river Wey after treatment.
