(2) what is the total number of ambulances operated by each of the Welsh health authorities; and what are the corresponding figures for each year since 1979.

Mr. Grist

This information is not held centrally.

Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what recent changes have been made in the provision of ambulance services for patients and hospitals in Gwynedd.

females on adult rates and (c) full-time employees on adult rates earned (1) £110 per week or less and (ii) £120 per week or less, in Wales during the last year for which figures are available; and what are the corresponding figures for each year since 1979.

Mr. Peter Walker

Information relating to male and female workers and all employees on adult rates for the years 1984 to 1987 is given in the table. Data for the period prior to 1984 are not available for all employees; but figures relating to male and female worker are published as table 114 of part E of the annual new earnings surveys, copies of which are available in the Library.

Mr. Grist

Gwynedd health authority is responsible for the provision of the ambulance service in Gwynedd. To improve the service to those in medical need the authority has recently published for the information of the public, doctors and hospitals, the criteria upon which the provision is based. A special financial allocation has been made to the authority to enable it to purchase five specialised ambulances for conveying patients from Gwynedd to hospitals in Liverpool for radiotherapy and limb fitting.

Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what measures are being undertaken by his Department to improve ambulance facilities in rural areas in Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Grist

It is the responsibility of individual health authorities to assess the need for and manage the ambulance service in rural areas of Wales.
