HC Deb 15 January 1988 vol 125 c447W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his Department's policy on the production of civil protection material in the Welsh language; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Patten

The question of providing a Welsh language version of the public information on civil protection was carefully considered at the time it was produced, in consultation with my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales. We are guided by the criteria of demand, expediency and expense recommended in the 1965 Hughes-Parry Report on the "Legal Status of the Welsh Language". In the light of those criteria, we were not persuaded that there was sufficient demand to justify the considerable costs which would have been involved in the production of a Welsh language version of this material.
