HC Deb 15 January 1988 vol 125 c418W
Mr. Warren

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster for what reasons the indentities of the holders of radio call signs are secret; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Butcher

The identities of civil radio licensees are not classified, but many users of radio such as the police and security firms have very good reasons for not wanting to make unauthorised reception of their transmissions easier. There are also commercial reasons for many other users not wishing to have their call signs made available. Radio amateurs are specifically asked upon issue of their licence whether they wish to have their call sign details published; I respect their decisions.

All licence details kept on computer are subject to the provisions of the Data Protection Act.
