To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many houses and flats owned by his Department are surplus to operational requirement; and how many have been empty for more than (a) four months, (b) eight months and (c) 12 months.

Mr. Hurd

Of nearly 8,000 dwellings owned by the Department, 218 are currently identified as surplus to operational requirements, 201 have been vacant for more than four (but less than 12) months and 11 for over 12 months. Six are still occupied. The Department is further reviewing its holding of dwellings.
