§ Mr. CurryTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has as to the financial contribution to the running costs and maintenance of the Settle to Carlisle railway service which has been provided by North Yorkshire county council in 1987 and proposed for subsequent years.
§ Mr. David MitchellI understand that North Yorkshire county council is making no financial contribution to the maintenance and running costs of the Settle to Carlisle railway service in the financial year 1987–88, but is contributing £750 for publicity. I am awaiting confirmation of the council's position.
§ Mr. CurryTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has as to the financial contribution to the running costs and maintenance of the Settle to Carlisle railway provided by Cumbria county council in 1987 and as to what contribution is envisaged by Cumbria county council over the next two years.
§ Mr. David MitchellI understand that Cumbria county council is presently contributing £27,000 to support services on the Settle to Carlisle railway, and that that level is unlikely to change in the next two years, provided the line stays open for British Rail services. I also understand that the county council is contributing £2,000 for publicity in 1987–88. I am awaiting confirmation of the council's position.
