§ Mr. FoulkesTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the current position of the Dumfries bypass in relation to projected expenditure and planned date of start of construction, and what were the original budget and original planned start date.
§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonThe Dumfries bypass has been under construction for many years. Throughout that period estimates of costs and planned start dates have varied as the results of detailed studies became known. The current cost is estimated at £15.10 million and it is planned to start construction in the late summer of this year.

§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonAs recently announced, feasibility studies are under way to consider the best way of implementing the upgrading. Until these studies have been completed, around the end of this year, it will not be possible to assess priorities in the trunk road programme, and how the A74 project will fit in. The estimated cost of the project is at least £200 million.
