HC Deb 14 January 1988 vol 125 c376W
Dr. David Clark

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many sheep in the restricted area of Cumbria which had died from natural causes were monitored for radioactivity in each month from June to December 1986.

Mr. Donald Thompson

None.

Dr. David Clark

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will place in the Library any literature relating to the disposal of dead sheep circulated to farmers in the restricted area of Cumbria following the Chernobyl accident in 1986.

Mr. Donald Thompson

In addition to the information I gave to the hon. Member on 10 December 1987 Ministry officials wrote — on 8 April 1987, at the start of the lambing season — to farmers in the restricted area outlining "mark and release" arrangements for the new lamb crop. This letter included a passage on the disposal of casualties. A copy of the letter is being placed in the Library of the House.
