HC Deb 14 January 1988 vol 125 c366W
Mr. Bermingham

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons in 1986 were committed to prison in lieu of default in payment of a fine.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The information available centrally is that in 1986 about 19,200 persons were received into prison department establishments in England and Wales following committal in default of payment of a fine. The figures appear in the annual publication "Prison Statistics England and Wales" (table 7.3, of the 1986 issue. Cm. 210), copies of which are in the Library.
