To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will provide figures for the rate of credit growth over the last four years.

The growth in consumer credit over the last four financial years is as follows:

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proportion of outstanding consumer credit is accounted for by credit card lending by banks.

Mr. Lilley

Credit on bank credit cards including its interest-free component accounts for 15 per cent. of all consumer credit outstanding and about 3 per cent. of personal sector debt.
