HC Deb 13 January 1988 vol 125 c280W
Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what form of monitoring is applied to the discharge of waste from the animal virus research centre at Pirbright; and what waste matters are involved.

Mr. Moynihan

Discharges of small quantities of low-level radioactive waste from the Animal Virus Research Institute are authorised under the Radioactive Substances Act 1960. The institute is inspected by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution to check that the discharges are within authorised limits. The inspectorate also monitors levels of radioactivity in the environment resulting from these discharges.
