To ask the Prime Minister for what reasons the sealed envelope and papers headed "Leader of the Opposition," the existence of which in the Public Record Office became known on 1 January have been subjected to a 75-year rule; and if she will make a statement.

The Prime Minister

A file from my office dating from 1957, listed in the Public Record Office under the heading "Leader of the Opposition", has been closed for 75 years under section 5(1) of the Public Records Act 1958. The file was closed in accordance with the criteria set out in paragraphs 26–27 of the White Paper "Modern Public Records", Cmnd 8531, March 1982.
