HC Deb 13 January 1988 vol 125 cc327-8W
Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how much money in real terms expressed at constant prices has been spent on nursing training in each of the last 10 years.

Mr. Newton

The information requested is as follows:

£ million at 1986–87 constant prices
1977–78 498
1978–79 479
1979–80 479
1980–81 503

£ million at 1986–87 constant prices
1981–82 490
1982–83 482
1983–84 480
1984–85 453
1985–86 441
1986–87 439

Notes:

The figures for each year are estimates made up from two elements

(a) The expenditure of English Regional Nurse Training Committees (for the years 1977–78 to 1982–83) and the grants made to the English National Board for Nursing, Midwifery and Health visiting for salaries of nurse teachers and other training costs (for 1983–84 to 1986–87).

(b) The salaries and superannuation costs, but not national insurance costs, of learners paid by Health Authorities. These salary costs do not take account of the service contribution made by learners during training which varies according to the particular course and the School of Nursing.
