To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he is yet in a position to make a statement on the future role of the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.

§ Mr. Maude
My right hon. and noble Friend the Secretary of State yesterday announced the conclusions of a review of some aspects of competition policy, including some aspects of the MMC's work. The M MC will retain its current role, but the Government expect that it will be possible to make further progress in cutting the length of time taken by merger investigations.
