§ 35. Mr. ConwayTo ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what information he has regarding the introduction of a common European standard to the telecommunications industry enabling mobile telephones to be functional throughout the European Community.
§ Mr. ButcherAn agreement was reached in May 1987 in the European Conference of Posts and Telecommunications (CEPT) on the technology to be used for a Europewide mobile telephone network.
In parallel with this, a joint effort between operators and manufacturers is under way id the special mobile group of CEPT to define the detail of the technical standard.
It is planned that a Europewide mobile telephone service will be introduced in 1991.
