To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what information he has on the outlook for manufacturers costs.

Mr. Butcher

In his Autumn Statement my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer forecast that manufacturers' total cost per unit of output would rise by 2 per cent. in 1988.

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what was the deficit or surplus which the United Kingdom experienced in manufactured trade with(a) the EEC and (b) the rest of the world, in the most recent 12-month period for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement.

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what effect he forecasts on the exports of manufacturing industries in 1988 arising from current exchange rates.

Mr. Alan Clark

Exports depend on many factors in addition to exchange rates. My right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer will be making a new forecast at Budget time.
