HC Deb 13 January 1988 vol 125 c259W
Mr. Hanley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his estimate of the number and percentage of firms who should have registered under the Data Protection Act and have not yet done so.

Mr. Renton

The Data Protection Registrar originally estimated that approximately 300,000 applications should be received from those required to register under the Data Protection Act. By 31 December 1987 there were 135,149 entries on the register and some 18.000 applications were still being processed. The registrar now considers that the original estimate was on the high side and that the current shortfall in registrations is no more than 100,000. He is continuing his drive to secure more registrations.
