To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will seek powers to ensure that corporal punishment will be illegal in city technology colleges; and if he will make a statement.

The provisions of the Education (No. 2) Act 1986 covering corporal punishment in schools may be applied under section 47(5)(a)(iii) to prescribed independent schools which are maintained or assisted by a Minister of the Crown. My right hon. Friend intends to lay regulations before Parliament to bring city technology colleges within the scope of this section.
