Mr. Darling

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if he will list the actual and projectd research and development expenditure from public funds under the heading nuclear in each of the years from 1979–80 to 1989–90, at 1986–87 prices.

Mr. Michael Spicer

The following table gives the Department's expenditure with the UKAEA on nuclear R and D and related programmes (including the decommissioning of old plant and radioactive waste management) during the period 1979–80 to 1989–90. The figures in brackets represent estimated expenditure on nuclear R and D alone. Figures on the same basis for the earlier years are not available.

The above figures do not include expenditure on nuclear R and D by other Government departments, the electricity supply industry and BNF plc either within the organisations themselves or with other organisations, including the AEA.

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if he will list the actual and projected research and development expenditure from public funds on energy efficiency in each of the years 1979–80 to 1989–90, at 1986–87 prices.

Research and development expenditure figures for 1979–80 are not readily available, since expenditure in that year was not allocated in a comparable way with subsequent years. Figures for expenditure by my Department on energy efficiency research and development (including Demonstration) for the other years, in pounds million at 1986–87 prices, are as follows:

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what is the actual and projected research and development expenditure from public funds on coal technology in each of the years from 1979–80 to 1989–90, at 1986–87 prices.

Research and developrnenl expenditure figures for 1979–80 are not readily available, since expenditure in that year was differently categorised. Figures for expenditure by my Department on coal technology for the other years, in pounds million at 1986–87 prices, are as follows:
