To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how many nurses are trained in paediatric intensive care now; and how many were so trained in 1979.

A post-basic course for paediatric intensive care nursing was introduced in England in the year ended March 1987. Prior to that there was a post-basic course for special and intensive care of the newborn which was introduced in 1983. The numbers entering that training during the years ended March 1985, 1986 and 1987 were:
