HC Deb 12 January 1988 vol 125 c252W
Mr. Michael Marshall

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what proportion of the professional information technology staff in his Department, including programmers, systems analysts and managers, is based in London and the south-east.

Mr. Portillo

Of those civil servants in DHSS wholly employed on information technology tasks (as specified in Treasury—Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency guidelines) in grades from executive officer to unified grade 7, 26 per cent. work in London and the south-east.

Mr. Michael Marshall

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how many professional level information technology staff are employed by his Department, including programmers, systems analysts and managers; and how many trainees there are for such posts.

Mr. Portillo

I regret that information is not available in the form requested. The Department does not maintain separate statistics for programmers, systems analysts, managers or trainees and such detailed information could be provided only at disproportionate cost. However, the total number of civil servants in the DHSS, wholly employed on information technology tasks (as specified in Treasury — Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency guidelines) in grades from executive officer to unified grade 7 is 1,494.
