43. Mr. Summerson

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how many more low-income families he expects to benefit when the new family credit scheme is introduced.

Mr. Scott

It is estimated that about 270,000 more families will receive family credit than would have received family income supplement had that scheme continued.

47. Mr. William Powell

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how much more will be spent on the new family credit scheme than is currently spent on family income supplement and associated benefits.

Mr. Scott

On the basis of a case load estimate of 470,000, spending on family credit from April 1988 will be over £200 million more than is currently being spent on family income supplement and free school meals and free welfare foods for family income supplement families.
