To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will estimate the annual cost to the National Health Service of the additional investigations and extra time spent by patients in hospitals for research carried out on behalf of drug companies.

The level of research activity varies widely between health authorities and it is not possible to estimate the overall cost to the National Health Service.
