HC Deb 11 January 1988 vol 125 cc7-8W
Dr. Marek

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if there are any plans to introduce in the Metropolitan police area the use of remote-controlled television cameras to record traffic law violations by motorists at traffic lights, and for use as evidence in prosecutions, in the light of the experiment conducted in Nottingham.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Within the limits set by law, the extent to which technology is used to enforce the law is a matter for individual chief officers of police. The scope for improving road traffic law enforcement through the further use of technology, supported as necessary by legislative change, is being considered by the road traffic law review, being conducted by Dr. Peter North of Jesus college, Oxford. His report is expected soon. The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis has indicated that he is awaiting the report of the review before reaching decisions on the use of technology such as that referred to by the hon. Member.
