HC Deb 11 January 1988 vol 125 c4W
Mr. Tony Lloyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what undertakings were given by Her Majesty's Government on contributions to the co-financing of structural adjustment programmes for sub-Saharan Africa at the meeting of the World Bank in Paris in December.

Mr. Chris Patten

The meeting identified substantial aid resources available from western donor countries for co-ordinated support for structural adjustment programmes in poor sub-Saharan African countries with debt problems. Her Majesty's Government indicated that they expect to commit about £250 million of programme aid over the next three years to the target countries.

Total pledges at the World Bank meeting amounted to $6.4 billion. In addition, the World Bank expects to commit $6.2 billion to the special programme of assistance from the eighth replenishment of the International Development Association.
