To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the value of strategic defence initiative contracts awarded in the United Kingdom to date.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many United Kingdom academic institutions are currently involved in strategic defence initiative research.

Seventeen.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many United Kingdom companies have been awarded strategic defence initiative contracts to date.

Thirty-eight.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what recent dicussions he has had with his United States counterpart concerning strategic defence initiative contracts; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Sainsbury

None recently, but there have been several ministerial and senior official contacts with the United States Department of Defence in recent months on United Kingdom participation in the United States strategic defence initiative research programme.
