HC Deb 11 January 1988 vol 125 cc49-50W
Mr. Thurnham

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement about the current level of recuitment of teachers of science subjects.

Mrs. Rumbold

I am glad to report that the number of recruits to initial teacher training science courses in England and Wales in 1987 is above target by 2 per cent. and within that physics courses, where there is an acute need, have recruited to 99 per cent of their notional target.

This is most encouraging and a firm indication that the positive measures taken by the Government to increase teacher supply are taking effect. We will continue to keep under close review the numbers of recruits to all science subjects.
