§ Mr. WorthingtonTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what proposals he has to reduce the number of remand prisoners in Scotland.
§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonThe decision to remand in any particular case is a matter for the courts; and the number of persons on remand is governed by the courts' decisions. The results of a pilot study on remands will be published shortly. The Scottish Office is about to undertake a detailed study of bail and remand decisions and is funding a feasibility study into the provision of bail accommodation for those who might otherwise be remanded in custody because they have no fixed address.
