HC Deb 11 January 1988 vol 125 c150W
Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what proposals he has to reduce the number of remand prisoners in Scotland.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The decision to remand in any particular case is a matter for the courts; and the number of persons on remand is governed by the courts' decisions. The results of a pilot study on remands will be published shortly. The Scottish Office is about to undertake a detailed study of bail and remand decisions and is funding a feasibility study into the provision of bail accommodation for those who might otherwise be remanded in custody because they have no fixed address.
