§ Mr. WareingTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations he has received about proposals to close the Southend and Oldchurch radiotherapy units; what discussions he has had with the North East Thames regional health authority about such proposals; and upon what basis the level of provision of radiotherapy services is determined.
§ Mrs. CurrieWe have received tens of thousands of representations from members of the public about these proposals. Following local opposition to the closure of the Southend radiotherapy unit, the North East Thames regional health authority has now put the matter to my right hon. Friend for his final decision.
Health authorities are expected to provide radiotherapy services on the basis of what best serves the patient. The Department's guidance on ways in which such services should be organised is currently under review.
