HC Deb 11 January 1988 vol 125 c171W
Mr. Thurnham

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how often he publishes statistics on private health provision.

Mrs. Currie

The Department prepares three prime sources of information on private health provision:

  1. i. SBH212 — details on places registered under the Registered Homes Act 1984—published annually.
  2. ii. SH9 — contractual arrangements between the National Health Service and private sector —compiled annually and being placed in the Library.
  3. iii. SBH211—private patients treated in National Health Service hospitals—compiled annually and available in the Library.

The implementation of the Körner recommendations will result in data being collected on a financial year basis. This may affect publication targets. The Department also contributes private medical insurance data to an annual Central Statistical Office publication, "Social Trends".

Mr. Thurnham

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what evidence he has on the effect on waiting lists of private health care.

Mr. Newton

National Health Service waiting lists consist primarily of people waiting for elective surgery, and the majority of operations carried out in the private sector are also for elective procedures, but it is not possible to quantify the inter-action between the two.
