§ Mr. SedgemoreTo ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry126W will invite the inspectors investigating alleged insider dealing by civil servants not to take out an application for punishment of Mr. Jeremy Warner, business correspondent of The Independent; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. MaudeThe inspectors applied to the High Court in March 1987 for the court to inquire into the refusal by Mr. Warner to answer certain questions put to him by the inspectors. The House of Lords has now decided that Mr. Warner did not have a reasonable excuse for his refusal to answer. By order of the House of Lords the matter will now be remitted to the High Court. It will be for the court to decide how to deal with the matter. It is not for the inspectors to make any recommendation about punishment.
