HC Deb 11 January 1988 vol 125 cc177-8W
Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what information he has about the comparative rates of admission to mental hospital for black and white people in the United Kingdom.

Mrs. Currie

I regret that statistics on admissions to mental illness hospitals subdivided into categories by race are not collected centrally.

Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the rates of admission to mental hospital for(a) men and (b) women.

Mrs. Currie

In 1986 the rates of admission into National Health Service mental illness hospitals and units in England were 364 male admissions per 100,000 male population and 468 female admissions per 100,000 female population.

Mrs. Currie

It is for the Yorkshire regional health authority to decide how the £4.7 million will be allocated within the region. I understand that an announcement has not yet been made by the regional health authority. The hon. Member may wish to approach the regional chairman for the information he is seeking.

The hon. Member may wish to know, however, that as from 1 April 1988 the liver transplant centre will be a designated supra-regional service. As such it will receive central funding of £287,000 for 1988–89 in addition to its current district allocation of £287,000 in 1987–88, a total therefore of £574,000 for 1988–89.
