HC Deb 11 January 1988 vol 125 cc156-7W
Mr. Steel

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the conception rate for people under 20 years in Scotland.

Mr. Rifkind

The known conception rate in Scotland in 1986 was 49.6 per thousand women aged 15–19 years.

Mr. Steel

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many health boards in Scotland provide special family planning services for young people.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

This information is not centrally available. It is for individual health boards to determine the pattern of provision of these services and the extent to which designated facilities are provided.

Mr. Steel

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what support his Department gives to the Edinburgh Brook Advisory Centre and to other agencies providing family planning advice and supplies to young people.

Mr. Rifkind

In the current financial year 1987–88 the Edinburgh Brook Advisory Centre is receiving £5,000 from the Scottish Home and Health Department towards the administrative costs of its all-Scotland education activities, and £2,834 from the social work services group for a study of the help which the Brook Advisory Centre staff may be able to give to social workers with clients who are HIV positive or suffering from AIDS.

Grant is also provided to the Family Planning Association, National Family Planning Group and Scottish Catholic Marriage Advisory Council, but these bodies do not concentrate specifically on young people. Most family planning services are provided by health boards, some of which make special provision for young people.

Mr. Steel

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what information he has as to what proportion of people under 20 years received contraceptive help and advice from their general practitioners in the Lothian health area.

Mr. Rifkind

This information is not available centrally.
