HC Deb 29 February 1988 vol 128 c449W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will estimate the average contribution to total Exchequer revenues which would, on average, be made by an individual during the course of his life.

Mr. Norman Lamont

[holding answer 23 February 1988]: An individual's lifetime tax contributions will depend on a large number of factors, including date of birth, marital status, pension provision, lifetime profile of earnings, assumptions about public expenditure; fiscal policy, and changes in the tax system. CSO figures (Economic Trends November 1986) suggest that in 1985, the latest year available, the average individual paid £744 in income tax and employee's national insurance contributions and £528 in taxes on final goods and services.
