HC Deb 29 February 1988 vol 128 c415W
Mr. Ingram

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will make a statement on the progress of the general agreement on tariffs and trade working party on trade and workers' rights.

Mr. Alan Clark

The proposal by the United States Administration for the establishment of a GATT working party to examine the relationship between labour standards and trade was discussed at the GATT council on 4 February. No conclusions were reached. Informal discussions are continuing to find a consensus solution, but opposition remains widespread, particularly from developing countries.
