To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will publish in theOfficial Report the criteria for granting exceptional leave to remain in the United Kingdom.

The circumstances under which persons who do not qualify under the immigration rules have been allowed exceptionally to remain in the United Kingdom were set out in the Home Office evidence to the Home Affairs Sub-Committee on Race Relations and Immigration in 1984 — "Minutes of Evidence taken before the Home Affairs Sub-Committee on Race Relations and Immigration" HC72, Volume II, paragraph 44. If the hon. Member has a particular point in mind he may wish to write with more precise details.
