§ Mr. StottTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make representations to the Bulgarian authorities about the denial of human rights to the ethnic Turks in Bulgaria; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. EggarWe share the hon. Member's concern about reports of human rights abuses in Bulgaria. We have discussed the position of the ethnic Turks with the Bulgarian authorities on several occasions and will continue to do so until it is clear that there is no longer any problem. My right hon. and learned Friend raised the426W matter with the Bulgarian Foreign Minister during his visit to this country in September 1987. The United Kingdom and others have also raised the question at CSCE meetings and in other international forums, including the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.
