§ Mr. Martyn JonesTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many non-administrative officers in former British dependencies received lump sum compensation on independence; and what criteria were used in assessing who received such compensation.
§ Mr. Chris PattenNo central record exists of the occupational status of the tens of thousands of overseas officers whose pensions are the responsibility of the British Government, or of whether they received compensation for loss of career. The information could be compiled only at disproportionate cost. The criteria for determining eligibility for compensation, which varied from territory to territory, were set out in each country's schemes.
