HC Deb 26 February 1988 vol 128 c338W
Mr. Colvin

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what is the official definition of a risk-bearing air miss;

(2) what is the official definition of a reported air miss.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

In the Civil Aviation Authority's published air miss statistics, air misses are categorised as A, B, or C depending upon whether there was a definite risk, a possible risk, or no risk of collision. Risk-bearing air misses are those in categories A and B.

In the same context a reported air miss means an air miss reported by any civil or military pilot in United Kindom air space. Reports are filed when a pilot considers that his aircraft may have been endangered by the proximity of another aircraft to the extent that a risk of actual collision existed.
