§ Mr. ConwayTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will give the average annual expenditure per patient in Wales in 1986–87.
§ Mr. Grist[holding answer 23 February 1988]: For the latest year for which data are available, that is 1986–87, the information requested is as follows:
Average cost in pounds per £ In-patient case 1,002.61 In-patient day 71.34 New out-patient 123.10 Out-patient attendance 27.41 New accident and emergency 26.05 Accident and Emergency attendance 18.83 New day patient 917.68 Day patient attendance 23.42 Day case attendance 62.48 However, care should be taken in making comparisons between countries on the basis of these figures as the costs incurred will have varied with the case mix, age and sex of 219W the patients, with the range of facilities available for treatment and as a result of other factors such as the costs associated with teaching. A more meaningful assessment can thus be made by comparing the costs of hospitals within roughly homogeneous groups, particularly where these have been related to case loads which have been statistically adjusted for differences in the specialty and age/sex mix of the patients concerned. To this end I would refer my hon. Friend to "Welsh Costings Returns" and "Key Statistical Indicators for NHS Management in Wales", copies of which are available in the Library of the House.
