HC Deb 24 February 1988 vol 128 cc236-7W
Mr. Grocott

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many civil servants are employed in his Department; what are their average weekly working hours; and how many are(a) on flexitime, (b) on job-sharing schemes, (c) on a four-day working week or nine-day fortnight arid (d) able to retire with full pension rights at 60 years.

Mr. Malcolm Rifkind

At 1 February 1988, the number of civil servants employed in the Scottish Office, excluding the Scottish prison service, was 6,496. The great majority of non-industrial staff work 37 hours (net); most industrial staff work 39 hours per week (net). On the basis of a recent survey, it is estimated that some 3,600 staff participate in the flexible working hours arrangements. There are 10 staff on job-sharing schemes and four staff working four-day weeks. All staff are able to retire with pension rights at age 60; to receive full pension rights an officer has to have accrued 40 years' reckonable service (actual service or purchase of added years).
